A lot of things happened this week. The Chicago Cubs broke their 108-year World
Series Victory curse. The New Orleans
Saints broke their West Coast curse.
Mark Ingram rushed for 158 yards.
I guess anything is possible.
The Saints couldn’t put away the struggling 49ers during a
high scoring first half but using an effective running game and an improving
defense stifled them in the second half en route to a 41 – 23 thumping. The Saints, which I had given up for dead
just 2 weeks ago, have evened their record at 4 – 4 after starting 0 – 3. This all sets up the most important game of the
year next Sunday when the Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos visit the
Superdome to start the second half of the year.
Drew Brees is as hot as he’s ever
been and his receivers are superb. Last
week, Tim Hightower’s success at running back not only rejuvenated the ball
control rushing attack the Saints have been sorely lacking, it seems to have
rejuvenated, or juvenated Mark Ingram, depending on your point of view. The Saints offensive line dominated, and the
Saints were balanced and prodigious on offense.
I don’t have visions of the Super Bowl dancing in my head, but if the
attack is balanced, they may yet make some noise this season. Play like this each week and the playoffs won’t
be out of the question. Get into the
playoffs and anything can happen.
But first comes next week’s
attempt to restore the dome field advantage that must be an integral part of any
playoff run. Broncos beware.
